COMMENT     The lack of translational initiation- and stop codons, the
            presence of reading frame shifts and in some cases a nonsense
            nucleotide sequence in Trypanosomal maxicirle gene is an
            inhetent feature of these genes.  These gene-encoded defects
            are removed at the transcript level by a process which we
            have discovered in 1986 and have baptized RNA-editing (see
            Benne et al (1986), Cell 46, 819-826; Benne (1990), Trends
            Genet. 6, 177-181).
            The appropriate amino acid sequences cannot be translated
            from the gene nucleotide sequences, but exclusively from
            fully edited transcript sequences.  The references in which
            transcript sequences have been determined are listed as
            citations in the appropriate features.
            The ND8 transcript is edited over its entire length and
            only the aa sequence deduced from the fully edited transcript
            reveals similarity with ND8, as has been described by Souza,
            Myler and Stuart (1992) Mol.Cell.Biol. 12, 2100-210
